Together, we are Barnet will highlight some of our many groups, sports teams and local projects, as well as individuals, who contribute so much to our community.

This week we’re focusing on Mary Pearce, who helps to run and coordinate The Grahame Park Independent Living Group, which has been running since 2000 and helps to bring people in the community together.

“Our group meets every Monday morning at the Grahame Park Community Centre. We welcome men and women over the age of 50, our ages currently range from 53 to 90. People come here to keep active and to socialise.

“You won’t find a more multicultural group than ours. Among our regulars, there are 23 countries of origin represented. We’re a friendly bunch and people have been coming here for years and years. Many go back to visit their home countries and when they return to Barnet they always come back to us.”

“This is a low-income area in the throes of regeneration. Being subsidised we are able to keep things affordable, provide speakers on various topics together with a variety of other activities, trips and outings. We offer everything older people need to keep active, to get out and about, to have fun and a laugh, and above all to make new friends.”
