Russian Ambassador in Cyprus Stanislav Osadchiy reacted on Friday to the publication of an informal meeting he had with Turkish Cypriot politician Kudret Ozersay.

“The Russian Federation recognizes only the Repulic of Cyprus,” Osadchiy underlined under a post on the facebook page of the so called “foreign ministry” of the Turkish Cypriot puppet regime, which claimed that Osadchiy had a meeting with “foreign minister” Kudret Ozersay.

In his comment below the post, via the facebook page of the Russian Embassy in Cyprus, Osadchiy said: “Mr. Ozersay you know very well that the Russian Federation recognizes only the Republic of Cyprus. Our meeting at the restaurant had an unofficial character as with the leader of the party. The day of our meeting you didn`t occupy any so called `official` post. I consider your publication about our meeting as an attempt to discredit me personally.”

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.

An illegal breakaway state declared independence unilaterally, on November 15, 1983, in the areas under Turkish occupation, an action condemned by the UN Security Council and the international community as legally null and void.
