Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades has appointed lawyer George Savvides as the new Justice and Public Order Minister. Savvides will be sworn in on Friday during a ceremony at the Presidential Palace.

Savvides is succeeding Ionas Nicolaou, who resigned at the beginning of May but remained in this post until the end of the month, at the President`s request, to complete actions regarding the reform of the justice system.

In statements to the press, following a Cabinet meeting on Thursday, the last one which Nicolaou attended as Minister of Justice, President Anastasiades said that Nicolaou was one of the most effective Ministers and among those who worked hard.

Referring to the justice system reform, Anastasiades expressed hope that parliamentary parties will contribute so that justice will be delivered in a faster way.

In this field Cyprus, he said, unfortunately ranks 28th among EU member states and 73rd worldwide.

This is an indispensable reform, a radical one, which creates the necessary conditions for a speedy administration of justice.

Anastasiades also said that George Savvides is a lawyer and is aware of the problems in the field of justice.

The new Justice Minister, who was born in Famagusta but has been living in Limassol since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, studied law in the UK. He is a member of the Cyprus Bar Association and of the International Bar Association.
