President Anastasiades must address in a sincere way the Secretary General of the UN calling for a resumption of the negotiations on the basis of the Guterres Framework, from where the talks had remained and on the basis of the convergences that have been agreed, but also on the condition that Turkey terminates its provocative actions in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Republic of Cyprus. This is what AKEL proposed at the meeting of the National Council on Saturday, the General Secretary of AKEL Andros Kyprianou told “Astra” ratio station.

The Christofias – Talat convergence with regards the utilization of the natural gas must also be reconfirmed so that any excuses Turkey is invoking in relation to the Turkish Cypriot’s interests so as to proceed to illegal actions in the EEZ of Cyprus are removed.

Replying to a question whether sanctions should be imposed on Turkey for its violations in the Cypriot EEZ, Mr. Kyprianou said that, according to information, such a proposal by President Anastasiades did not find a response among the majority of European leaders.

At the same time the General Secretary of AKEL wondered whether this would help towards the solution of the Cyprus problem, which should be the primary objective. Nonetheless, he noted that any measures to be taken against Turkey must be well thought out so that they can have any result.

Referring to DISY’s criticism of AKEL, Mr. Kyprianou stressed that the outbursts of governing DISY party President Averof Neophytou have been hypocritical in recent times and are aimed at overlooking the burning problems that people are currently facing.
