An eye-catching new crossing has been installed at Bury Street West as part of the Cycle Enfield upgrade to provide safer and shorter informal crossing points for people walking and cycling.

The crossing markings were installed as part of the junction redesign which was carried out for the walking and cycle route that crosses Bury Street West, heading towards the new Salmons Brook path connecting Winchmore Hill with Edmonton.

The environmentally friendly and skid-proof markings were installed as part of a Safe Steps to School programme which is a visual road safety programme to improve the safety of school children on the streets.

Enfield Council’s Deputy Leader, Cllr Daniel Anderson, said: “This crossing is the first of its kind in the borough and is significantly more visible to drivers making it safer for pupils on their way to Edmonton County School. By providing a brightly coloured crossing at this location, coupled with footprints guiding children to and from school, it provides an incentive for children to use the appropriate place to cross the road and improves safety along Bury Street West for everyone.

“We are always looking to find innovative and effective ways of making our roads safer and this is an excellent example of how we are trying new things to provide better solutions to the challenges we face”.

A second crossing is due to be installed on Westerham Avenue outside Hazelbury Primary School in the coming weeks.

Cycle Enfield is about transforming the borough’s high streets and town centres and promoting more active forms of travel to improve health and reduce pollution.

The A1010 South Hertford Road scheme from Ponders End to Edmonton Green is due to finish later this Spring while the completed A105 Green Lanes scheme is already seeing 1,000’s of cycle journeys a month, with recent data showing a 52 per cent increase in cycling levels between July 2016 and 2018.
