In an interview to Gulf News, Marcos Baghdatis commented on his passion and love for tennis. The Cypriot won one match at the Dubai Open and he said he has no plans for retirement from tennis yet. “For sure, I am just happy to be playing tennis.

After a certain time of my career, it was tough with all those injuries, and my body just couldn’t handle the workload anymore”, said Baghdatis. “Right now, I am trying to enjoy as much as possible and play at this level as much as possible so that I can once again make my way up.

Some days are good, some days are not, but the good thing is I am still enjoying playing tennis.” Baghdatis enjoys competing in Dubai: “I’ve had two wild cards here in two years, and the reason for this is that I love playing here.

I am happy to be here every time. I am grateful to the organizers, especially Colm McLoughlin and Salah Tahlak for giving me a wild card for the second time this year. I love coming here and my family also loves coming here. This is a perfect place to be, and of course, playing here is an amazing feeling.”

In 2016, Baghdatis reached the final of the Dubai Open. Unseeded that year, Baghdatis had a great run in the event, upsetting the fourth seed Roberto Bautista Agut in the second round. This year, Baghdatis won against fellow wildcard Mohamed Safwat but lost to semi-finalist Gael Monfils in the second round in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
