In a world where everyone seems to be obsessed by a number, I thought it would be a good time to discuss how the fixation over a number can hold you back in so many ways.

Recently it was brought to my attention more so, by the introduction of a beautifully matched couple who had got married, but had told me they nearly missed out on such a great relationship as one almost dismissed the other because one thought the age gap was a little too much. Yet when they had put themselves with people of their own age, it did not seem to work. In reality, the younger person was excessively mature and the older person was excessively younger in mindset which reflected in their physical attitude, outlook and wellbeing. As I started to think about it more, I started to notice it more; take my 85-year-old aunt for example – she whizzes round and keeps herself young. She is physically active with walking, shopping and even works a little every day in doing dress alterations. She had always been in the fashion industry and was also a model for clothing in the past. She does what she has always loved doing. It seems to keep her mind very active and is still really with it and up to date in everything. She eats healthy, has a glass of wine, gets her hair coloured and has a super glam Hollywood classic Sophia Loren style, has her nails done with Shellac, always looks fashionably stylish, uses moisturising tint and puts some lipstick before going out anywhere. She keeps herself fit as she keeps her home immaculate, it is in order and very modern. Wow! What an inspiration. If I want an opinion on a subject, I most definitely call her. She has infinite wisdom, knowledge and a fun, outgoing attitude towards everything, that she is just such a pleasure to be around. You would think she was possibly in her 60s.

Many of us can hold ourselves back by a number. We assume that at each particular age, certain things will occur. We may get this ailment or we should not do something or wear something. Yes everything will go south if you let it. You will probably gain weight if you eat excessively and do no exercise, wait and expect it to happen.

In reality we are like a vehicle and if we look after the engine and bodywork, it will run smoothly for us. If however you leave it without fuel and attention, then yes, it will no doubt break down and cease to work eventually, and then you could of course blame it on the age of the vehicle. But what about the classic cars that run really well when treated properly and with a little tweaking, they can become a turbo boosted dynamo.

I personally like to forget my own age and when people ask, I reply 21 forever. I am always me, I do exactly the same physical activity as I did when I was 21, I still eat, drink, dance, do my kickboxing to the same level, if not better with so much more skill. I still enjoy mixing with people of all ages as I appreciate them for themselves. I do not ask ages because I don’t need or care about numbers. It is the fun and enjoyment factor, individual characteristic elements from people that I appreciate. I believe in living in the moment, seizing every opportunity in life. Life is not forever, and one should do whatever they want to that makes them happy. Never say it is too late to go and learn something new, do or even wear something. Forget what others may think or say about how you act. Learn to do things for you, yourself and realise that you do not need other peoples’ approval to just be you, at any age.

Do not let others negative mindset on age and numbers reflect on you. Every age has its beauty! JUST BE, DO IT and ENJOY IT as you do so. The key to life surely must be to appreciate, feel blessed for being, learning, always getting back up from the fight and gaining strength and wisdom from each experience, good or bad.

Stop counting the numbers. Become that classic beauty with great vision and power and enjoy other classics along with the retros.
