Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters were called to a fire at a block of flats on Packington Square in Islington.

A balcony was completely destroyed by fire and part of a flat on the fourth floor of a six storey block. All occupants evacuated the block of flats before the Brigade arrived.

Crews rescued an unconscious cat called Crystal from the flat and gave her oxygen to resuscitate her.

At the height of the fire the Brigade’s 999 control centre received 24 calls alerting them to the blaze.

The Brigade was called at 2223 and the fire was under control by 2322. Fire crews from Shoreditch, Euston, Holloway, Whitechapel and surrounding fire stations were at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
