A great start for Cyprus in the Euro qualifiers 2020 beating San Marino 5-0 to start the new Euro campaign on top of the table.

Their goals  at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia came from Pieros Soteriou with  two penalties in the first 20 minutes followed with goals from Ioannis Kousoulos, George Efrem they werre 4-0 half time and Kostas Laifis further punishing the hapless visitors.

In the other group games Chelsea’s Eden Hazard scored twice to spare the blushes of former club-mate Thibaut Courtois as Belgium began their road to Euro 2020 with victory over Group I rivals Russia

Leicester’s Youri Tielemans’ low shot gave Belgium a 14th-minute lead.

Two minutes later keeper Courtois gave the ball away under pressure from Artem Dzyuba and Denis Cheryshev slotted in.

But just before the break it was 2-1 when Hazard converted a penalty before he slotted in a late third.

The World Cup semi-finalists are in Cyprus for their next qualifier on Sunday. Russia travel to neighbours Kazakhstan, who embarrassed Scotland 3-0 earlier.

Alex McLeish refused to discuss his future after leading Scotland to one of the nation’s most ignominious defeats in their opening Euro 2020 qualifier in Kazakhstan.

The Scots were two down inside 10 minutes, and conceded again just after the break to give the Kazakhs only a second win in 21 qualifiers.

On Sunday, they face San Marino, who lost their opener 5-0 in Cyprus.

The U21 Cyprus team beat Gibraltar 1-0 and the scorer was one of our own UK Cypriot Jack Roles who plays for Tottenham.

In the U19,’s Cyprus lost away to Portugal 3-0 three UK Cypriots making their debuts Ruel Sotiriou, Hector Kyprianou and Sielis.
