Barnet’s Conservative councillors have voted to hike up all on street and car park charges by 28 per cent at the recent Environment Committee meeting on 14 March. This will increase parking charges across the whole of Barnet and for example parking for over 3 hours in Golders Green will cost a staggering £9.

Labour councillors opposed the plans saying they will hit local businesses in our high streets and town centres.

Barnet Labour’s Environment spokesperson, Cllr Alan Schneiderman said:

“A 28% hike in parking charges is simply a Tory stealth tax that will harm local shops, cafes and restaurants in our high streets and town centres. Rather than discouraging shoppers we should be supporting our local businesses, many of which are already suffering from high rates and rent and competition from online retailers.”
