A delegation of the Council of Europe’s Group of States against Corruption (GRECO) will visit Cyprus on 7 and 8 February 2019, in the context of GRECO’s 4th round compliance procedure and in connection with allegations concerning the administration of justice in Cyprus, according to a press release by the Council of Europe.

According to the announcement, as part of the 4th round, GRECO is currently monitoring Cyprus’ compliance with the Council of Europe anti-corruption standards relating to the judiciary. This round also evaluates measures to prevent corruption in respect of MPs and prosecutors.

In July 2016 GRECO published its 4th round evaluation report on Cyprus (ENG-FRA), where it made 16 recommendations to the Cypriot authorities. In a compliance report published in September 2018, GRECO evaluated the level of implementation of its recommendations contained in the first report.

A new assessment is due in the course of 2019.

GRECO’s recommendations include the management of potential conflicts of interests in Cyprus’ judiciary, as well as strengthening its ethics and integrity framework.
