AKEL will not consent to any solution whatsoever other than the solution of Bizonal, Bicommunal Federation because confederation or a two-state solution would be disastrous, stressed the General Secretary of AKEL from New York.

“Astra” radio correspondent Panikos Panayiotou said that Andros Kyprianou, speaking to a meeting of Cypriots in New York, criticized the policy followed by the President of the Republic since the collapse at Crans Montana to date and underlined that everything possible must be done for the negotiations to resume based on positions of principle.

Referring to Turkey, the General Secretary of AKEL reiterated what he said during his recent speech in Ankara, namely that Turkey is far from being a Democracy, that it is provocative and issuing threats, as well as having expansionist designs. However, he added, there is no other way to solve the Cyprus problem other than the talks.

Andros Kyprianou also had a meeting with the Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the United Nations Security Council, Jonathan Allen. During the meeting a review was made of what has happened since Crans Montana to date. Furthermore, the efforts of the United Nations for a resumption of the dialogue were discussed, as well as the possibility of London intervening towards this end.

The General Secretary of AKEL also met with Archbishop Demetrios of America.

Today, the delegation of AKEL, which also includes the members of the Political Bureau of AKEL Yiorgos Loukaides and Toumazos Tselepis, will have a meeting with the Deputy Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations Security Council Jonathan Cohen, and the Deputy Representatives to the Security Council of Russia, China and Greece.

Tomorrow the AKEL delegation will have a meeting with the Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations for Political Affairs, Rosemary Di Carlo.
