The anachronistic system of guarantees in Cyprus can no longer be maintained, Greece’s Alternate Foreign Minister Giorgos Katrougalos said, after his talks were completed on Wednesday in New York with the Secretary-General’s envoy for Cyprus, Jane Holl Lute.

We reiterated with Lute our commitment to solve the Cyprus problem, based on UN decisions. And I repeated the well-known positions that the international aspect of the Cyprus problem cannot but take into account the progress achieved in Crans Montana and was imprinted in the so called Guterres Framework, Katrougalos said.

He also noted that the Greek position is that the Cyprus problem is a matter of implementing international law adding the anachronistic system of guarantees cannot be maintained.

The meeting lasted more than an hour. Lute departed without making any statements. The UN did not release any statement on the contents of the meeting or her schedule in the forthcoming days.

It was learned that Lute will depart for Turkey on Wednesday evening where on Friday she will meet with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu. She is expected to arrive in Cyprus on Sunday.
