We express our strong condemnation and deep concern over the incident that took place at a school in Yeroskipou where the fascist party of ELAM managed to infiltrate the school in question under the pretext of transferring aid to school pupils with the aim of spreading racist attitudes and positions. Certain serious issues arise from this incident:

  1. How and why was ELAM permitted to go to the school? We recall that the DISY-Anastasiades government is the only government across the EU that converses politically with such ultra-right formations and “legitimizes” them in the eyes of society.
  2. How can ELAM be allowed to spread its racist rhetoric inside schools, which is contrary to the basic purpose of our education and to most of our educational goals?
  3. How are thousands of children in our schools with an immigrant background (who have one or both parents coming from abroad) protected and are being subjected to racist behaviours in violation of their human rights?

It is a positive development that the Parents’ Association of the School has reacted to ELAM’s action. But that is not enough. The Ministry of Education must give explanations and take measures that will protect children from racist acts and racist speech, as well as protecting their human rights in our schools.

Finally, Cypriot society now has a clear picture of what ELAM’s “donations” are really aiming at.
