Mr Olayinka Olaniran Solomon, director of Mighty Pound Ltd, was summoned to appear at Highbury Magistrates Court on 26 November 2018 after pleading not guilty to the offence.

Mr Solomon’s company sold a bread knife to a police cadet who was part of a group accompanied by Haringey Trading Standards, Haringey Council’s Environmental Officers and Police Officers carrying out test purchases around High Road, Wood Green and Lordship Lanes.

The case was heard by a district judge who ruled that the defendant did not take reasonable steps to avoid this happening and the system used to scan age restricted goods was inadequate or not working at all.

The knives were also displayed in the main part of the shop rather than behind the counter and the judge stated that one successful knife sale was too many, considering the knife crime that is taking place across London.

Mr Solomon was fined £2000, ordered to pay costs of £1699.95 and a surcharge of £170.
