Two fire engines and around 10 firefighters were called to a fire at a sheltered accommodation block in Westcroft Close in Enfield.

A flat on the first floor was damaged by fire. Sadly one woman was found dead at the scene by crews wearing breathing apparatus.

Approximately 25 residents left the building before the arrival of the Brigade and 22 people were assessed at the scene by London Ambulance Service as a precaution.

The Brigade was called at 2040 and the fire was under control at 2234. Fire crews from Enfield fire station attended the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
