The borough is holding ‘16 days of action’ over the next two weeks to raise awareness of violence against women and girls, and urge residents to help us put a stop to it by working together.

The campaign – which began with the International Day of Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25 and runs to Human Rights Day on December 10 – aims to raise awareness of and dispel myths about violence against women and calls on the community to act together to challenge it.

Each of the 16 days during the campaign will feature workshops, educational events and training opportunities for council staff and community partners.

Following the 16 days, posters will be shared across the borough to raise awareness of violence against women and girls and to make it clear that ‘Together We Can Stop It’.

The campaign is designed to increase awareness of the many forms of violence against women and girls, give advice on how to recognise when it’s happening and highlight where to access support for those affected.

We will also spotlight the work of the borough’s specialist services and make the community more aware of the support that is available in our borough.

Gender-based violence is believed to affect one in three women worldwide. Although the focus has traditionally been on physical abuse, it can refer to any behaviour that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women.

Zina Etheridge, Haringey Council’s Chief Executive, said:

“Violence against women and girls has to be tackled. It is not always obvious, and we must all do our part to challenge it. In Haringey, a range of support is available for those affected by violence and we encourage anyone affected to seek help. But it is also about ensuring that the rest of us in the community know the signs and how to safely make a stand against violence against women and girls – together we can stop it.”
