Barnet Council has failed to complete bin collection rounds on time during the first week of the newly configured service, which started on 4 November. A decision to reorganise the recycling and refuse rounds and make changes to residents’ bin collection dates was forced through by the Conservative Council in June to save £700k over the next three years. The Conservatives have also forced through a suspension of the separate food waste collection, alongside stopping green waste collections during the winter.

On 8 November – four days after the new rounds were introduced – Barnet Council was still tweeting: “If your bin hasn’t been collected, please leave it outside by 6am & we will collect it ASAP. We hope to complete all collections, including outstanding collections, by the end of the week. Thank you for your patience.”

Councillors have received reports from residents of missed bin collections in Station Road – Finchley, West Heath Road in Childs Hill ward, and Church Lane, Squires Lane, Clare Close and Helen Close in East Finchley. Some residents have also reported that they were not informed about the changes to bin collection days,  did not receive the Council’s leaflet explaining this or actually received the wrong leaflet

Barnet Labour’s Environment Spokesperson, Cllr Alan Schneiderman, is calling for an update and early review of the new rounds at the next Environment Committee on 28 November to enable councillors to feedback problems that residents have raised with missed collections and poor communication of the changes. He is submitting a member’s item to the meeting on the issue.

Cllr Alan Schneiderman said: “It seems as if the new bin collection rounds have got off to a sticky start with several missed collections being reported by residents and some residents saying that they did not receive a leaflet notifying them of the changes. The Tories fought the local elections on a pledge to maintain bin collections, since then they’ve stopped the separate food waste collection, adopted a policy to stop collecting green waste for up to 12 weeks a year and now even more refuse and recycling collections are being missed. I hope the current problem with missed collections can be sorted out and a quick review of the changes carried out.”
