Would you know how to restart a heart? That is the question being asked for ‘Restart a Heart Day’, which takes place on Tuesday 16 October.

Without CPR the chances of surviving a cardiac arrest is zero and every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces the chance of survival by up to 10 per cent.

The good news is that anyone can learn CPR. The fire crews at Borehamwood and Elstree Fire Station in Elstree Way, in partnership with the Hertsmere Community Safety Partnership, are running FREE CPR Awareness Sessions to teach vital life-saving skills to help you be prepared to save a life.

These sessions involve learning how to perform CPR on an adult, child or baby, how to use a debfrillator and stop bleeding and choking.

Councillor Pervez Choudhury, Portfolio Holder for Community Safety, said: “These are invaluable skills for anyone to learn as you never know when you may need to use them. Having some basic knowledge of life saving skills can
dramatically improve someone’s chances of survival.

“We have run these session before and they have been really well received by everyone who has attended, with many saying they would feel much more confident dealing with a casualty in the event of an incident. A session lasts just over an hour, but in that time you’ll learn life long skills that will help you to save a life.”

The sessions all take place at Borehamwood Fire Station on the following dates:

  • Friday 9 November: 2:30pm to 4pm
  • Monday 19 November: 7pm to 8.30pm
  • Wednesday 5 December: 7pm to 8.30pm
  • Monday 10 December: 2.30pm to 4pm
  • Friday 11 January: 2.30pm to 4pm
  • Monday 21 January: 7pm to 8:30pm
