The plenary of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has adopted a resolution with an important reference to the under construction nuclear power plant in Akkuyu, Turkey.

According to an announcement issued by the Cyprus Parliament, in the context of a debate on a draft resolution on the European nuclear safety, whose rapporteur is a Turkish MPs, a resolution was adopted by overwhelming majority, containing a clear reference to the Akkuyu following an amendment made by the head of the Cypriot delegation to the PACE, Stella Kyriakidou.

The relevant paragraph of the adopted resolution expresses, inter alia, PACE’s serious concern over the under construction nuclear power plant, which is very close to Cyprus and other neighboring countries in a seismic area of Turkey, as it is noted in a resolution of the European Parliament adopted in July 2017.

In her intervention, Kyriakidou said that after the nuclear accident in Chernobyl, 32 years ago, there should be no discounts on nuclear safety under any circumstances.

She also referred to the relevant resolution of the European Parliament calling upon Turkey to stop the construction of the nuclear power plant and to start a dialogue on the issue with the neighboring countries such as Cyprus and Greece.
