Well. It happened. After one year and eight months, St Panteleimon FC lost a competitive match. Sound the bells.

We have to look back to February 2017, in last year’s Anagram Records Trophy, where the Saints lost a round on penalties against Broadfields United FC.

After an incredible, but level headed 2017 and 2018, the Saints lost to Kensington Dragons 0-2. They are out of the Alec Smith Premier Division Cup.

A wet and cold Greenford saw a patchy first half finish 0-0. A few chances but nothing clear cut.

Dragons scored from a penalty. But only after Saints keeper Lazaro saved, and they netted the rebound. The second goal came to complete a miserable day for the home side.

Full credit to Kensington Dragons, who played good football, passed the ball, were fit and resilient and outplayed the Saints. And could finish.

In basketball, the “hot hand fallacy” assumes that a player that makes a run of baskets will just continue to do so. This also appears in economics: with rising markets, in housing prices. At some point though, there is a correction. The Saints needed the bitter taste to go with the sweet.

When we stumble and fall, we get up, learn, and move on. Onwards and upwards.

The Saints continue top of the league, and are still in the Intermediate Cup and the FA Vase. Next Saturday 13th, it’s back at Greenford for the FA Vase first round proper, against Cray Valley FC.
