Firefighters are reminding restaurant and takeaway owners to make sure their extraction systems are clean after a fire at a fish and chip shop with flats above in Hainault Road, Leytonstone.

A small part of the ground floor was damaged by fire. The external part of the shop’s ventilation system also sustained some fire damage. Three people left the building before the arrival of the Brigade. There were no reports of any injuries.

The Brigade’s fire investigators believe the cause of the fire was from oil residue building up over time in the ducting from the fryer which ignited.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Restaurant and take-away owners should always take care to make sure their extraction systems are kept clean as a build up of fat and grease within the filters can lead to a fire.”

The Brigade was called at 1551 and the fire was under control at 1715. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Leyton, Walthamstow, and Homerton fire stations attended the scene.
