Some of Enfield’s most iconic locations are throwing open their doors to visitors free of charge during Open House London on 22 and 23 September.
Once again the borough is supporting the capital’s festival of architecture with 20 locations participating in a city-wide celebration of the buildings, places and neighbourhoods where we live, work and play.
Enfield has some marvellous and varied examples of architecture that can be visited during the weekend. The oldest is thought to be the Parish Church of St. Andrew in Enfield Town, dating back to the twelfth century. From the 20th century, one site to visit is the Deephams Sewage Treatment Works, London’s fourth-largest sewage works, based in Picketts Lock. Other gems include Forty Hall and Estate, Christ Church Southgate, designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott which includes stained glass by Morris & Co, and Grade II listed Salisbury House, a fine example of late-Elizabethan architecture, rumoured to be home to its own ghost. The Royal Small Arms Factory, Rumi Mosque, and Queen Elizabeth II Stadium, home to Enfield Town FC, also join the list.
Enfield Council’s Leader, Cllr Nesil Caliskan, said: “Enfield Council is thrilled to be taking part again this year and we are grateful to the Enfield Society, who are generously part-sponsoring the scheme again.
“Good architecture can tell us a lot about our community and history. This year’s list of participants reflects our vibrant industrial history our artistic heritage and also our diversity and inclusiveness.”
Some of this year’s buildings have been entered into Open House Weekend for the first time so please stop by and see some of our borough’s finest architecture and neighbourhoods.
