Barnet’s Labour councillors are calling for Barnet Council to investigate the best way to tackle weeds without using pesticides and herbicides like Glyphosate which can cause harm to people, animals and the environment. A Labour Full Council motion on the issue has been referred to the next Environment Committee meeting on 8 October for discussion.

The text of the motion submitted by East Barnet Labour councillor, Jo Cooper says:

“Council notes that pesticides and herbicides like Glyphosate that are used in our parks and public spaces can cause harm to people, animals and the environment. Council notes that LB Hammersmith & Fulham have gone pesticide free, and other councils are now taking the pesticide free route.

Council requests that the Environment Committee investigate the best way for LB Barnet to go pesticide free, and report back to Full Council with options.”

Cllr Jo Cooper said: “Unfortunately the Tory amendment to this motion was merely to monitor EU Safety Legislation on Glyphosate products until 2022. Barnet residents want weeds cleared using products and methods that do not potentially risk health to people, pets and wildlife. Yet again, a lack of commitment by the Tory council to even look at alternative options shows their total disregard for residents’ concerns.  Labour councillors will continue to push for action on this issue.”
