Pavlos Kontides is the first Cypriot athlete to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday.

Kontides who is taking part in the World Sailing Championship in Aarhus, Denmark managed to secure the much-coveted spot yesterday finishing first in the day’s Laser race. By the time it is finished the event will see another 13 spots filled for the Tokyo Olympics.

Kontides, an Olympic silver medalist (London Games), will take part in the Olympic Games for the fourth time in his sports career.

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and House of Representatives President Demetris Syllouris congratulated the Cypriot sailor through Twitter.

We congratulate our many times victorious champion, who will honour Cyprus in the Olympic Games of Tokyo 2020 once more, President Anastasiades wrote on Twitter.

He has made us proud one more time, Syllouris wrote, congratulating Kontides.
