Cypriot Olympic sailing medallist Pavlos Kontides became the world champion for a second year, after ranking first in the Laser race in the World medal races at the Hempel Sailing World Championships Aarhus 2018 in Denmark.

The 28 year old sailor became Gold medallist once again, defending his 2017 triumph at the ILCA World Championship in Split, Croatia where he became World Champion.

President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades congratulated the Limassol sailor.

In a Twitter message, President Anastasiades said “you gave us great joy”, congratulated Kontides and said “you make Cyprus proud”.

During the Aarhus championships, Kontides also qualified for the Tokyo Olympics.
