It’s official…the borough has some of the best architecture in London!

A number of landmark buildings have been shortlisted in the prestigious New London Awards organised by architecture and planning experts, New London Architecture.

Tottenham’s Ada National College of Digital Skills, Holcombe Market and Bernard Works (a complex comprising homes and workspaces) and Wood Green’s Blue House Yard have all been shortlisted in various categories and residents can play their part by voting for any of the projects in the People’s Choice Award.Voting closes on Friday 22 June, with winners set to be announced on 4 July..

It’s an honour and it would be great for residents to support us in the People’s Choice Award,” said Jan Kattein of Jan Kattein Architects which designed Blue House Yard. “We aimed to take something which was a little unloved – the old council car park – and transform it into a community of workshops and small businesses while also being vibrant and eye-catching and I think we achieved that.

Another great community asset is Holcombe Market on the Tottenham High Road. Re-opened only a couple of years ago the brilliant blues of the stall-holders’ shops combine in a clever combination of squares to make the most of the relatively small space.

I love it here and business has certainly improved since the market was re-designed,” said Dave Hall of Hall’s Greengrocers in the market. “The previous market had a badly lit alleyway running by it and it encouraged anti-social behavior whereas now locals feel a lot safer and there’s a nice sitting area and it’s just had such a positive reaction from stall-holders and customers.

The awards also honour projects that have not yet been completed, such as the new home for Ada, the National College of Digital Skills and the Bernard Works development – both planned for Tottenham.

That’s what makes these awards slightly different and it’s great for us we’ve been recognised,” said David Saxby from the architects designing the new college. “It’s a very exciting project and the new campus will have a tall, spiral tower that we hope will become a local landmark.
