A man who used a pair of underpants to disguise himself before carrying out a cash in transit robbery in Enfield has been jailed.

Jason Paul Keogh, 44 (21.10.73) of Deans Drive, Enfield was sentenced at the Old Bailey on Tuesday, 15 May to seven years and two months’ imprisonment.

He had pleaded guilty that day at the same court to robbery, possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition.

Police were called on 10 September 2017 to reports of an armed robbery of a G4S guard outside the Morrisons supermarket on Aldermans Hill, N13.

The guard was robbed of a cash box containing a quantity of cash as he returned from the store towards his van. Keogh – who had his face covered with a pair of pants – approached the guard and grabbed the box from him whilst brandishing a silver handgun. The suspect ran off down an alleyway at the side of the shop and over fences towards the car park.

No shots were fired during the robbery and the guard was not injured.

CCTV footage later recovered showed Keogh in the alleyway prior to robbery arranging the undergarments on his head. The same camera showed him fleeing the scene in the moments after the robbery; however the pants appeared to obscure his view and he walked into a parked van before making off from the scene.

The stolen cash box was recovered a few hours later in the canal at New River Path on Oakthorope Road. It had not been breached and still contained the full amount of stolen cash. The handgun, a Revolver, containing three rounds of live ammunition, was found discarded nearby.

An investigation was launched by the Flying Squad and Keogh was identified as a suspect following forensic work. He was arrested on 29 November 2017 and charged the following day.

Detective Inspector Jason Barber, of the Met’s Flying Squad, said: “Despite the slightly comedic way Keogh disguised himself for this robbery, it shouldn’t detract from the fact this was a very serious offence that put people at real risk of harm. The sentence handed down reflects this serious nature.

“The Flying Squad will continue to robustly investigate all crimes of this nature and continue to protect the industry and public against such dangerous individuals.”
