The essential role that foster carers play is being highlighted during Foster Care Fortnight which got underway this week.

The annual awareness campaign, which runs from 14 May to 27 May, aims to shine a spotlight on the difference foster carers make to the lives of thousands of children, and draw attention to the need for more foster carers nationwide.

There are close to 64,000 children living in foster families across the UK.

In Barnet, there are 115 foster carers who care for around 115 children and young people.

The Fostering Network estimates that fostering services will need to recruit a further 7,000 foster families in England over the coming year, with the greatest need being for foster carers for older children, sibling groups and disabled children.

Barnet Council Leader, Councillor Richard Cornelius, said: “The number of children in need of a foster home continues to grow nationwide. Providing a happy, stable home environment for children and young people to grow up in is crucially important, and foster carers can play a vital role in making that happen.

“As we continue to strive towards becoming the most family friendly borough in London by 2020 we are encouraging more people to become foster carers.

“If you think you can provide a caring and stable environment for our young people, please contact us.”

Barnet values the important role foster carers undertake, and the support package for foster carers includes in-depth training and a payment scheme.
