The Republic of Cyprus has made representations to the UN over the Turkish provocations at Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone.

Permanent Ambassador to the UN, Kornelios S. Korneliou  during a meeting with UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feldman, outlined the Turkish provocations where the Italian energy giant ENI`s drillship in the eastern Mediterranean, was
halted Saturday by a Turkish Navy ship.

Saipem 12000 has planned drilling operations on behalf of ENI in Block 3 in the waters of the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of Cyprus. The drillship was on its way to start its activity under a license provided by Cyprus. It is now
staying put while awaiting instructions.

Diplomatic sources said the Ambassador noted that Turkey’s actions are a violation of the Republic of Cyprus’ sovereign rights, the Law of the Sea Convention and are also a threat to peace and security in the region.

Ambassador Korneliou also asked for the SG to be informed on the matter.

The same sources quoted Feldman as saying that Turkey will be asked to show self-restraint.
There will be more representations to other UN Secretariat officials in the next few days.

Leaders of the Greek American community have made representations to the State Department on the issue.
