The Central Committee of AKEL will convene on 3rd March at an all-day session to assess the results of the presidential election. The discussion is expected to develop on the basis of a specific document that is to be prepared.

The General Secretary of AKEL Andros Kyprianou, speaking yesterday to “Astra” radio station, said the Party would conduct a study aimed at identifying what the composition of Cypriot society currently is as far as political beliefs are concerned. The aim is to examine ways in which the political base of the Left in Cyprus will be expanded.

He also pointed out that to promote a change in policies there must be clear political positions, but also a consistency to them to bring about a change in policies. He reiterated that AKEL’s goal is to cooperate with other parties despite the fact that it seems that parties of the centre have shifted to the right. He cited the example of the Democratic Party DIKO, which is shifting closer to the Right on economic issues. He said, however, that over the last five years there has been cooperation with the Social democratic party EDEK, the Ecologists Movement and the Citizens’ Alliance to promote policies or to reject the government’s economic policies.

Without cooperation, the General Secretary of AKEL said, it is not possible to promote policies in the Cypriot people’s interests. AKEL, concluded A. Kyprianou, wants to maintain a line of communication with the people who voted for Stavros Malas. He sent a message to the members of AKEL and THE Party Base Groups that they must intensify their contacts with the people by taking initiatives to solve people’s problems.
