One of the star players for Newport in their fourth  round 1-1 FA Cup draw was UK Cypriot defender Mickey Demetriou.

Newport took the lead in the 38th minute but Harry Kane popped up in the 88th minute to equalise and set up a replay to be played on February the 7th 2018 to be played at Wembley Stadium.

Mickey was born In Durrington near Brighton his Grandfather is from Cyprus.

Demetriou had trials with both Leicester City and Fulham before learning his trade with the Glenn Hoddle Academy in Spain. From there on he went to Kidderminster, Shrewsbury, Cambridge United and now Newport.

The 27-year-old, who made his Football League debut with Shrewsbury following his move from Kidderminster.

“The Cyprus FA are investigating his eligibility to play.

“They’ve monitored his progress. They have been very impressed with him.

Demetriou has previously played for the England C non-League side, making his debut against Bermuda in June 2013, but we believe that would not affect his full international status.
