The Cypriot first-division match between APOEL Nicosia and AEL Limassol has been interrupted for more than two hours, after fan clashes and the injury of a ball boy.

Riot police were required to intervene and the match finished amid near-empty stands on Monday.

Referee Demetris Mashias halted play late into the first half in Limassol after a ball boy appeared to have been hurt by a firecracker thrown from a section of APOEL supporters.

 He was taken away by ambulance to a private clinic.

The match resumed a half hour later until Mashias again whistled a stop to play when fans began showering the pitch with flares.

Some opposing fans then made it to the edge of the pitch and began hurling objects at each other.

Police in full riot gear moved in to keep them apart.

Match officials and the players returned to the dressing rooms for a second time with everyone expecting that it would be abandoned.

However, after more than an hour and with the majority of fans filed out of the stadium, the match resumed to a nearly vacant Tsirion Stadium and finished 0-0.

In Sunday’s other match in Nicosia Omonia lost at home to Limassol side Apollon 1-0 Omonia have still to appoint a new manager since Bambos Christoforou left. Apollon’s goal coming from. Adrian Sardinero Corpa in added time.

Excellent goalkeeping by the Spanish AEK keeper Pablo kept Olympiakos at bay but Olympiakos took the lead in the 28th minute with a goal from Migelito . Not long after AEK equalised with a goal from Florian and then just after the break Ivan Triscovski scored the winner to keep AEK at the top of the League table.

In other matches Second placed Anorthosis made it difficult for themselves in beating Alki Oroklini 2-1 who took the lead with  a Suray goal twenty minutes later Anorthosis equalised with Cisse  and scored their winner  late in the match through Abdillai.

Seventh placed Pafos drew 0-0 with Ethnikos Achna who are still bottom.

The Famagusta team were the better side in the opening half but were wasteful in front of goal and went behind in the 53rd minute after Tigrudja Suroy beat Harush from outside the penalty area.

New Salamis got back to their winning ways beating fellow relegation battlers Aris 2-0 with their goals coming in added time from Anderson and Mintikis.

Ghanaian forward Benjamin Asamoah was the hero of DOXA Katokopia as he bagged the winning strike in their 2-1 victory over Ermis in the Cypriot First Division League.

Ermis shot into the lead in the 16th minute to force Doxa, who are playing away into chasing the game. Back from half time, the visitors lifted up their performance and fetched the equalizer in the 50th minute through Finnish striker Sadik Berat.

Asamoah who has been the star man for DOXA Katokopias all season made a statement of intent in the 68th minute by hitting the crossbar with a powerful header. The 23-year-old stunned the home supporters with his 87th minute strike. Asamoah has scored four goals in 15 appearances to help DOXA to 6th on the table after 15 matches.
