Cypriot Member of the European Parliament Takis Hadjigeorgiou (GUE) has told a group of Cypriot journalist attending a joint press seminar in Brussels on the Future of Europe, organized by EPIO and the EC Representation in Cyprus, that the EP Committee on the Panama Papers meeting today will condemn the killing of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia and demand a quick resolution of the case.

A total of 11,5 million papers are being examined, he said further. Giving an example as to the amounts related to the Panama Papers, he referred to the case of a single company which has hidden capitals in 70 different spots, and one of them was discovered with the amount reaching 70 billion euros.

Hadjigeorgiou also referred to the Cyprus issue expressing the opinion that a new effort will be made for a solution after the presidential elections in the Republic of Cyprus, in early 2018, noting though that he is only “partially optimistic” about the success of a new effort.

He further said that the Greek Cypriots in his opinion are more afraid of a non functional solution than anything else, pointing out that those pro or against a solution should explain the difficulties ahead with honesty.

Cyprus has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion. The latest round of UN-facilitated negotiations, in July this year, ended inconclusively.
