Travellers broke into the site on Wednesday night and the next day lorryloads of commercial waste began being dumped in the car park.

Police and town hall officers stopped the fly-tipping on Friday and served the group with an eviction notice. They were gone by Saturday morning and the clean-up process began.

Islington’s environment boss Cllr Claudia Webbe said: “Islington Council will not tolerate this selfish and irresponsible behaviour. We are furious at the fly-tipping on this site. It is illegal dumping on an industrial scale.

“Working together with the police, we have taken decisive action to stop the fly-tipping, and the occupiers have now left the site.

“We will search the rubbish for evidence that can be used in possible prosecutions, and wherever possible will seek the maximum penalties for fly-tipping.”

Complaints had been made to the council about the noise levels and intimidation by dogs.
