Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades had a meeting on Tuesday evening, in New York, with US Vice President Mike Pence, in the sidelines of the reception which US President Donald Trump hosted for the heads of state and delegations taking part in the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly.

According to sources, President Anastasiades referred to the failure of the Conference of Cyprus in Crans-Montana, and briefed Pence about the reasons of this failure, noting that he expects the US to offer its assistance for the resumption of efforts for a settlement of the Cyprus problem.

Pence expressed his satisfaction over Anastasiades` determination to reach a settlement and underlined the US administration`s commitment for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem, within the parameterse of the UN relevant resolutions.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The latest round of UN-peace talks at the Swiss resort of Crans – Montana ended without an agreement. Talks held under the auspices of the UN aim at reunifying Cyprus under a federal roof.
