Police say that a woman has died from apparent smoke inhalation following a fire in her Limassol apartment in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The victim has been identified as being a 50-year-old woman. Reports of the fire at the apartment in the Chalkoutsa area of Limassol came in at around 2.30am with firefighters arriving shortly at the scene and needing to break through the locked front door.

The victim was found face down in her bathroom with no external injuries. Preliminary investigations have so far pointed to death by smoke inhalation although an autopsy report later on Tuesday is expected to give the exact cause of death.

The fire had started in the kitchen of her first floor apartment and it appeared that the woman collapsed during her attempt to escape.

Foul play has so far been ruled out. She was rushed to Limassol General Hospital where doctors declared her dead-on-arrival.
