Turkey’s expansionist attitude and maximalist positions reveal its real intentions vis-à-vis a Cyprus solution, House President Demetris Syllouris said on Sunday, adding that Ankara aims at strategically and politically controlling all of Cyprus.

Addressing a memorial service in the village of Lagoudera, in Nicosia District, Syllouris said, according to an announcement distributed by PIO, that the insistence of the Turkish side on excessive demands limits the scope of action for the Greek Cypriot side.

Turkey’s intransigent stance in the negotiating table “negates any notion of justice and morality on a daily basis”, the President of the House of Representatives added.

It was obvious, once more, that Turkey’s political position only aims to serve itself and not the interests of the Turkish Cypriots, Syllouris said. The Turkish Cypriot leadership has always been an instrument in the hands of the Turkish government, he added.

The President of the House noted finally that our fight is a difficult one, but Greek Cypriots cannot back off. The Greek Cypriot leadership must continue with its efforts, with the same intensity, we cannot concede to an unjust, insufficient and unilateral capitulation when it comes to our national survival, Syllouris concluded.

UN-backed talks that took place between June 28-July 7, in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, ended inconclusively. Peace talks aim to reunite Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion, under a federal roof.
