The high standard of performances by students at this year’s St Andrew the Apostle Talent Show ensured an evening of fun entertainment for an appreciative audience.
The school, which is fast-gaining a strong reputation for encouraging students to develop their talents, held its annual showcase on Friday (16 June) at The Intimate Theatre, Palmers Green.
Some 20 acts performed a variety of classical and modern vocal, musical and dance entries before the three high-calibre judges; guitar and bouzouki virtuoso, Pavlos Doukanaris, singer-songwriter, Eleni C, and pop star, Martika LA. All stressed that having fun was an important part of being an entertainer.
First prize went to Anastasis Avraam with his hard-hitting soulful solo of Take Me To Church.
“I really enjoyed myself and it is so nice to see how much talent we have in our relatively small school”, he told the cheering audience.
Christian Germanou was awarded second place after his skills on the bouzouki prompted the audience and students to get up and dance in the aisles to Zorba. Third place went to Standard Issues, the school rock band with attitude for “Sweet Child of Mine”.
Mr. Doukanaris congratulated everyone on their performances and said that when it came to having fun, everyone was a winner. “Having fun is what entertainment is about. Well done to everyone – we had a very hard decision. But it was a wonderful experience.”
Headteacher, Mr. Robert Ahearn, said: “Watching the performances I could see how so many of you have overcome your fears and, over the years, have not only grown in confidence and developed your talents, you had fun.”
He also thanked the judges, Friends of St Andrew’s (FoSA) for organizing the refreshments, staff and pupils who helped behind the scenes and Head of Performing Arts, Mr. Kostas Lasithiatakis, who, along with his team, had worked hard to bring the whole show together.
While the judges deliberated, the St Andrew’s Orchestra played a jazzy rendition of Summertime – perfect for the hot summer night. The St Andrew’s Choir also gave a confident performance of Lay Me Down and Freedom 90 in tribute to the late George Michael.
