Peter Loizou designed and with fellow students from the Weymouth College  carved the monument to Thomas Fowell Buxton Baronet and MP for Weymouth who led the anti slavery movement succeeding William Wilberforce in the early nineteenth century.

The stone for the monument comes from Albion Stone, Portland. A total of 144 stones were used to build the monument. The stones were carved by the student of Weymouth College under the supervision and expertise of Master Craftsman Richard Mortimer. The monument had been under construction since the year 2010 and was completed by November 2016. To know more about Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton, click here.

Peter’s family roots are in Akanthou which is now in occupied  Cyprus. He was born in London  in Finsbury Park in 1974 . Peter studied at King’s College London where he got a degree in Geography. He belated discovered a talent for art at night classes at St Martin School of Art in London. Basically then  left the day job and went to study stonemasonry at Weymouth College at the Dorset Arts Centre in Poundbury the new town founded by HRH The Prince of Wales in Dorset. He is now a lecturer at the college.
