Innovative project to get kids moving wins competition…

After months of encouraging primary school children to find exciting and unusual ways of being active; the winners of a competition to encourage youngsters to be more energetic have been announced.
The competition was organised as part of Enfield Council’s successful ‘Move More’ campaign, where schools had been invited to participate in the competition which aimed to motivate primary aged pupils to increase their physical activity in an easy, sustainable and fun way.
Chesterfield School in Chesterfield Road, Enfield, won first place for their innovative project which saw a red line painted in their playground and the children encouraged to run around it every day.
The heart line runs around the edge of the playground and it is one tenth of a mile in length, each child ran 10 laps of this which meant they had completed a mile a day, every day.
The school also organised special work outs during classes to keep pupils even more active. Their prize is a visit to the ‘Jump In’ trampoline park in Enfield.
Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Safety & Public Health, Cllr Krystle Fonyonga, said “This was a fantastic competition which challenged primary schools to find new, interesting and innovative ways of encouraging pupils to be more active.
“This competition forms part of our ‘Move More’ campaign which looks at ways of encouraging residents of all ages to remain active. You only need to make small changes to your life to notice a real difference to your health; walking and cycling instead of driving where possible, and using the stairs instead of a lift is a great way to start. It’s all about making simple healthy choices.
“We want to build strong communities and improve the health of all of our young people.”
Hazelwood School in Palmers Green came second with their commitment to playing games at break time and making use of a specialist PE teacher to increase the variety of sports and activities on offer. Their prize is gym passes for the families of the children involved.
Worcesters School in Enfield came third for setting PE homework, which asked pupils to complete a form showing how active they had been in their holidays. Their prize is a session at Whitewebbs Golf club for the pupils who won.
