Dunstable Town FC was founded in 1883 and has been a mainstay of senior non-league football for most of its history. It boasts amongst its former players, George Best, the legendary Manchester United and Northern Ireland international, Jeff Astle, West Bromwich Albion and England, Tony Currie, Sheffield United and England and Kerry Dixon, Chelsea and England. The club was managed by Barry Fry during the 1970s and it was Fry, that persuaded George Best to guest for the team a few times after he had left Manchester United. Dunstable Town once played against Arsenal, going 1-0 up early on in the game only to lose 13-1 – well you can’t win them all!

The Bedfordshire club is one of only three “Invincibles” in the English football system alongside Preston North End and Arsenal, as in the 2012-13 season, the team went unbeaten in the Spartan Premier Division winning the title to boot.
The club then went on to win the Southern Central title the next season on the very last day of the and since the 2014-15 season have competed in the Southern Premier League. The club has held its own but it is always tough at this level as it takes a lot of dedication and money. At the end of the 2016-17 season, the Chairman, John McLoughlin, stepped down. There then followed an unsuccessful attempt by local businessmen to take over the club, leading to the diehard supporters of the Mighty Blues taking over and now running the club. Why the interest in this club? Well as part of the fans takeover, the fans elected Dr Alex Alexandrou as their Interim Chairman, who as part of the new Committee of the club is helping to get the club back on its feet. Alex has supported Dunstable Town since moving to the area in 2013. Last season he helped the club set up a Community Football Education Project for local schools.
Alex is the son of Panayis and Loulla Alexandrou of Vasili and Petra respectively. Alex was born in London in 1963 and like many London Cypriots is a football-mad fan! He has had a varied career and is now a Freelance Academic working with a number of universities and schools in the UK and abroad.
Alex still cannot believe what is happening – there he was going to matches with his son Louie and now he is working to turnaround the club along with what others might say are equally foolhardy but loyal supporters! Alex feels that it is not only a worthwhile challenge taking up this position but also a privilege as non-league clubs such as Dunstable Town are part of the local community and help include many people who otherwise might not get involved in the sport.
Alex has not been slow in getting support from the Cypriot community in terms of getting them to sign up as members and securing support from the Barnet-based Cypriot accountancy firm JA Francis & Co. If you are interested in supporting Alex and his fellow supporters contact them through their social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter.
The club has just appointed the experienced Tony McCool as their manager and here are Alex and Tony celebrating the appointment.
