Students from a New Southgate school put their best foot forward on Monday (20 February) to celebrate the opening of a brand new zebra crossing.

The Headteacher of Broomfield School, Peter Travis, worked with Enfield Council to get the zebra crossing installed to make it easier for students to cross the busy Wilmer Way.

There are four schools on the Broomfield Campus, with pupils ranging in age from three to 19, and everyone will benefit from this crossing point due to its proximity to the A406.

Staff and pupils decided to celebrate the new crossing by joining Cllr Ayfer Orhan, Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Children’s Services & Protection, and Cllr Daniel Anderson, Cabinet Member for Environment, in recreating The Beatles iconic ‘Abbey Road’ zebra crossing album cover.

Cllr Orhan said: “Back in 1969 when The Beatles were photographed in Abbey Road there were a lot less cars around than there are now, so road safety is now higher than ever on the agenda.

“The safety of our students is a top priority. Not only will this zebra crossing allow staff, pupils and other residents to cross this road safely, but it will help to slow traffic on this busy residential road.”

Cllr Anderson said “I am always ready to ‘Twist and Shout’ about our road improvements and am especially glad that this new zebra crossing was ‘Something’ that we could deliver.

“Enfield Council has implemented a number of road safety schemes, such as 20 mph speed limits, parking restrictions and other traffic calming measures around schools to ensure that pupils can arrive and leave their schools safely each day.”

Peter Travis, Headteacher of Broomfield School, said “Broomfield School has been working with Enfield Council for some time to help improve road safety in the local area.

“Wilmer Way is a fast moving road, as many cars leave the A406 at speed, and we really needed a safe and visible crossing that not only pupils and parents can use, but indeed the whole community.

“We are really delighted that it is now in place and we hope everyone will ‘Come Together’ and use this crossing.”
