President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades has said that it would be cowardly if we are overcome with fear and remain unchanged on the Cyprus problem, stressing he is proceeding with negotiations on Cyprus boldly, knowing that this is what he needs to do for the people.

In remarks in Limassol, President Anastasiades said that he understands the concerns that are being expressed. However, “if we remain concerned, if we are overcome with fear that every bold step we take presents risks, things will remain unchanged, the unacceptable status quo will be perpetuated and this is something nobody likes,” he added.

Nobody would like to see the Turkish guarantees continue or the presence of the Turkish troops perpetuating or our country divided, said President Anastasiades.

He noted that what he is trying is through dialogue, and knowing the concerns of the people of Cyprus, to give a fight to achieve what he was given as a mandate from the people, to find a way to free the people, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

This is what I am doing and will continue until the end, he said, adding that he will not be the one to decide but the people, and time will be given for the people to understand the elements of a solution and through a referendum, approve or reject it.

Therefore, he said, I am proceeding with the negotiations with boldness, acknowledging the concerns and what I need to do for all the people who represent the Republic of Cyprus.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci have been engaged in UN-backed talks since May last year, with a view to reunite the island under a federal roof.
