A man has been jailed for 10 months after admitting to a string of thefts using a moped in and around Hackney and Islington.

Louis Kyriacou, Islington, pleaded guilty to the offences on Tuesday, 18 October at Snaresbrook Crown Court.

He was sentenced today, Tuesday, 15 November, at the same court.

The offences relate to five thefts on the same day between 11:00hrs and 11:50hrs in north London

Police were initially made aware after two suspects were seen riding a moped on CCTV in St Peter’s Street, Islington, at 11:00hrs on Tuesday, 9 February, where the first offence occurred.

Following further enquiries the moped was located a short time later in Stamford Road.

The moped failed to stop for police and was then pursued by officers. The National Police Air Service were also called.

The moped was subsequently involved in a collision in Clapton Common, Hackney at 11:51hrs

Lewis Johnson, 18, who was riding the bike died following the collision. Kyriacou – the pillion passenger on the bike – was injured.

He was taken to hospital and subsequently discharged. At the time of the incident Kyriacou was found with five stolen mobile phones in the jacket he had been wearing at the time.

Kyriacou was arrested on Wednesday, 10 February, after being linked to the five offences.

He was charged on Wednesday, 15 June and appeared in custody at Thames Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 16 June.

He was charged with the following which were committed on Tuesday, 9 February this year:

Theft – 11:00hrs – St Peter’s Street, London, N1 – A man aged 25 had his Samsung S6 mobile phone.

Theft – 11:16hrs – Kingsland Road, London, E8 – an 18-year-old man had his iPhone stolen.

Theft – 11:20hrs – Hackney Road with the junction of Queensbridge Road, E2 – a 55-year-old woman had her Samsung S6 edge stolen

Theft – 11:30hrs – Old Street, Shoreditch, London EC1V – a 39-year-old man had his iPhone 6 stolen.

Theft – 11:47hrs – City Road, London, EC1V. A 35-year-old man had his iPhone 6 stolen.
