fire that broke out on Wednesday afternoon at the largest power plant of Cyprus in Vasilikos Area on the south coast of the island has been brought under control, according to the Fire Service director Marcos Tragkolas.

The fire broke out during desulfurization system repairs at unit 3 of Vasilikos power station which was out of order, EAC spokeswoman Christina Papadopoulou-Theofanidou told CNA.

She also said the fire did not affect the operation of the other units of the station which continued to operate normally while there was no problem with the supply of electricity to consumers.

She also said that there were no casualties and injuries only material damage the total of which will be calculated tomorrow with the first light of day. The investigation into the causes of the fire will take place tomorrow.

Papadopoulou said the damage suffered by the unit 3 is not expected to affect any of the plant`s capacity to meet the electricity needs.
