A 54-year-old woman from Limassol was arrested on Sunday for trying to bribe a policeman during a traffic stop.

Police said in an announcement that around 8.30am when a traffic policeman stopped her for speeding at 117km per hour instead of 80km on the bypass road between the roundabouts Ayios Athanasios and Yermasoyia.

During the check, the woman insulted the officer, police said, and then pulled out of her wallet a number of notes totalling €50 and placed them inside the vest worn by the policeman.

“Immediately the officer returned the money to the 54-year-old and informed her that she was under arrest for trying to bribe an officer and for insulting him,” the police said in a statement.

“Reacting, the 54-year-old started her car and left the area at breakneck speed.”

An arrest warrant was issued and the woman taken into custody shortly afterwards. She was then charged and released.
