The declaration of the pseudo-state by Denktash in 1983 represented another step in Ankara’s plans for the partition of Cyprus. Thirty-three years after the illegal declaration of the pseudo-state, despite the international condemnation of this action too, which is stressed particularly in resolutions 541 (1983) and 550 (1984) approved by the UN Security Council, the occupation and its consequences are continuing.
On the occasion of today’s anniversary, AKEL calls on the international community to send out at long last strong signals to Ankara. At the same time, only through our firm commitment to the principles of the solution of the Cyprus problem, with flexibly but also persistence on the sought goal, can we achieve the termination of the partitionist status quo and our country’s reunification.
The negotiation procedure is at a critical juncture. The leaders of both communities consider that significant progress is being recorded on many chapters of the Cyprus problem. It is at the negotiating table itself that will prove whether this procedure can lead to a final positive outcome. Right now what matters is prudence and seriousness on the part of the political leadership, parties and the people. The attempts to cultivate a climate of fear and negativity on the one hand and a climate of over-optimism on the other, do not serve the common goal.
AKEL stresses that the steadfast goal remains the liberation and reunification of Cyprus. It remains committed to the position that the solution of bicommunal, bizonal federation with political equality, as defined in the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council and with a single sovereignty, a single international personality and a single citizenship safeguarded, is the only way to put an end to the partitionist faits accomplis.
On the occasion of the anniversary of the pseudo-state’s declaration, AKEL is organizing an anti-occupation political rally today Tuesday, 15th November 2016, at the ORFEAS checkpoint in Nicosia 19: 00 p.m. The main speaker at the event will be the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL Andros Kyprianou.
