The Political Bureau of the C.C. of AKEL convened today and examined the developments surrounding the Cyprus problem in view of the meeting of the two Cypriot sides due to take place in Switzerland.

The Political Bureau of AKEL considers that the meeting in Switzerland is of crucial importance for the course of the negotiations. A possible convergence on the territorial issue will open up the prospect for achieving an overall solution. If the negotiations do not move forward then the danger looms of a deadlock, with unpredictable consequences for the day after.

In view of the negotiations in Switzerland, the Political Bureau of AKEL calls on the President of the Republic to be consistent to the agreed framework and the principles of the solution, while at the same time demonstrating the necessary pragmatism.

Furthermore, the Political Bureau of AKEL urges the political forces to show restraint and composure so that the President of the Republic can conduct the negotiations in a climate of unity on the domestic front.

AKEL will continue to act in a serious and responsible manner on the Cyprus problem, aiming at the achievement of a solution that will end the Turkish occupation and reunify our country and people within the framework of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality as described in the relevant UN resolutions, for a solution that will provide for one state with a single sovereignty, a single citizenship and a single international personality.

We are seeking a solution that will restore the human rights and fundamental freedoms of all of the people, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots and make our people the true masters of their homeland.
