British Transport Police officers are appealing for information after an incident of racial abuse on a London Overground service from Stratford to Highbury & Islington on Monday, 3 October between the hours of 8.45 and 9pm.

A 25-year-old Asian woman wearing a hijab boarded the train at Stratford station taking her seat in the last carriage. Shortly into her journey a man described as being black, with short dreadlocks wearing a dark top and large on-ear headphones sat next to her making offensive and threatening comments, he threatened to hit her when a man intervened to help her.

PC Roy Ward said: “We do not tolerate any sort of hate crime, this was a very intimidating experience for the victim leaving her shaken. Other passengers in the carriage saw this incident and we appeal for them to come forward. I am especially keen to speak to the man who intervened and tried to help the young woman.

“Were you on this service? Anyone with information is asked to contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40, or text 61016, quoting reference 178 of 4/10.”
